antPlanning for SALE exploration and research began in earnest during the late 1990's. There have been many workshops and planning activities that have engaged  the scientific community around the world. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) showed leadership in creating the SALE Group of Specialists in 2000 in Tokyo to serve as a focal point for interested parties as the SALE science and technology agenda evolved. These activities have culminated in various national SALE programs and the present, SCAR Scientific Research Program SALE.

These activities have formulated guiding principles for SALE exploration and research, defined and refined scientific objectives, assessed technological requirements, and addressed critical environmental stewardship issues. These years of international planning and discussions have left a rich legacy of workshop and meeting reports that have laid the foundations for SALE. These reports are archived at this site.
