Remote Observations

LV3dBefore entry into subglacial environments, much can be learned from geophysical surveys, ice-penetrating radar imaging of lake surfaces, and seismic sounding to determine water depths and sediment thicknesses. Several programs  geophysical surveys in both East and West Antarctica are scheduled during the IPY 2007-2008 and the outcome of these investigations will be useful in selecting targets for lake access and sampling, testing scientific hypotheses, improving conceptual thinking and testing theories in lieu of direct observations and samplings.
