Sediment Cores

Sediment CoreSediment retrieval from the deep ocean is commonly achieved using various types of corers. These corers might be adaptable for deployment down an ice borehole. In particular, the drilling and coring techniques of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Programs (IODP) may be adaptable to the special needs of SALE exploration. Major scientific themes for IODP include the study of gas hydrate and the deep biosphere. The SALE community will keep abreast of developments in the IODP “tool box” and look for ways to adapt IODP technologies to the needs of SALE. IODP is dealing with similar issues including recovery and maintenance of samples  at high temperatures and pressures, the laboratory equipment and techniques to analyze these samples, developing technologies to recover and analyze gas hydrate, “clean” drilling techniques to recover microbiological samples, and the development of down hole sensor packages to continuously log subsurface properties.
